WEST END YARDS - Portsmouth, NH

West End Yards is a small, mixed-use development on the outskirts of Portsmouth occupying a former light-industrial area.  Historically, this site comprised a network of buildings that included ice houses and lumber sheds, not surprising given the adjacency to the railroad.

The landscape here involves two centers:  The Junction and The Courtyard.  The Junction is a woonerf (the relevant translation being "common access" from the Dutch) or shared street.  This plaza-type space, a meeting of cars and people, will be active with residents and visitors alike milling about.  The latter is an enclosed garden exclusive to the residents.

Select Details

At West End Yards, we used a combination of off-the-shelf products either as-is or adapted while also suggesting new furnishings to be fabricated from repurposed objects, all with a coordinated finish and touch.  The intent with the site elements was to evoke the history of the site in a modern context.  Many of these details were not realized, but they were enormous fun to develop.
