COLGATE OLYMPIC AD
We created a 12'-0" tall sculpture for a television commercial which aired during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. It was a really fun marriage of digital and analog techniques. We made a polymer cast of the actual product. Then I cut the casting into cross sections with the band saw, scanned the pieces and traced them in CAD, enlarged the traced cross sections, and printed them. The prints served as templates we used to cut out the 20x enlarged sections in open-cell foam, making a terraced profile after we stacked and adhered them. The artists then smoothed the terraced edges, coated the sculpture in a shell of parrafin wax, and applied the graphics.
