TARRYTOWN RIVERWALK – Tarrytown, Upstate New York

Tarrytown Riverwalk is an esplanade in upstate New York that serves as one of the many links in a chain of riverfront parks beginning at the Southern tip of Manhattan and continuing North through Westchester County.  The Tarrytown site was a former asphalt plant, a history which compelled us to collaborate with an ecological design firm and to develop a bio-engineering strategy that kept any run-off and infiltration from entering the Hudson.  We did this by creating a series of swales to capture the majority of the run-off from this hillside town. Then we installed a bentonite layer to cap the contaminated subsoil on top of which we placed two feet of clean fill.  We then re-shaped the resulting ground to create rain gardens.

Path Layout Plan

As the multi-use path was the central feature of this project, we worked closely with the civil engineer to establish a method of ensuring an accurate layout.  The engineer located several monuments based on the State Plane coordinate system which we then used to identify the northings and eastings that would define the path centerline.

Wood Deck Details

Even though these decks looked and felt as though they were on solid ground, in reality they bridged the rain gardens, connecting the park interior to the esplanade.

Overlook Details

There was a bit of problem-solving involved with this particular deck.  Its shape and interface with the ground were not conventional.

Interpretive Sign

I sourced the images, laid out the graphics and wrote the copy for the sign whose theme was Culture.
