Gallery on the Charles River - Charlestown, Boston, Massachusetts
In this school project, we had to select a site within the Boston neighborhood of Charlestown, identify an intervention opportunity and develop a solution for it. I was interested in the idea of bringing new life to lost or underutilized urban spaces. In New York, we often see tennis facilities nestled up against the anchorages of the various city bridges. Here I wanted to appropriate the bays under the Green Line viaduct as a series of art installation spaces for use by individual sculptors or exhibits spaces for use by the Museum of Science across Charles River Dam Road. Taking advantage of the dam maintaining a consistent water level, I proposed the installation of a walkable mesh surface that, at times, would have a thin layer of water above it. In the Winter, this layer would freeze, perhaps allowing whimsical urban moments such as visitors skating around the installations.
